Contact Print Ordering Details

Contact prints are 9" x 9" images printed on photographic paper with an approximate scale of 1"=1,320'. Each print covers approximately a 4 square mile area, or around 2,600 acres.

Orders of 1 through 9 prints may be ordered by using the legal description (i.e., township, range and section number). This information can be found in numerous locations including plat books (available contacting your county clerk or from mapping companies) and the Wisconsin Atlas & Gazetteer (available at many bookstores, gas stations or discount stores). A legal description looks like this: "T 26 N, R 12 E, S 18" , where "T" is for township, "R" for range and "S" is for section.

Orders of 10 or more prints must include the county flight line number, negative roll number, and photographic frame number. These numbers are available on photo index maps, which can be found at DNR field offices or by calling the Division of Forestry at (608) 267-7494.

Stereoscopic Viewing

Stereoscopic viewing provides the third dimension of height. Think of what you see when you're in an airplane. You can see differences in the heights of buildings, trees and topography, which is what you see when viewing airphotos stereoscopically. The airphotos were taken with about 60% overlap in the flight line (see below). Adjoining flight lines overlap each other by about 30%. This allows an image to appear on at least 2 consecutive photographs. This overlapping feature provides for viewing stereoscopically (in three-dimension) by aligning two consecutive photos and using a stereoscope. Enlarged airphotos are generally too large for this purpose.

Overlap Image

If you are interested in being able to view photos in three-dimension, at least 2 consecutive airphotos must be purchased and viewed with a stereoscope.

Black-and-White IR versus Color Infrared

Forestry's Aerial Photography Project is in the process of converting from B&W IR to CIR. Each county is available in only one format depending on the year of acquisition. Refer to the map to determine whether the county you are interested in is available in B&W IR or CIR.
