Hybrid American Chestnut Could Mitigate Climate Change

A Purdue University study shows that introducing a new hybrid of the American chestnut tree would not only bring back the all-but-extinct species, but also put a dent in the amount of carbon in the Earth's atmosphere. American chestnuts grow much faster and larger than other hardwood species, allowing them to sequester more carbon than other trees over the same period.

Arborists Working in EAB Quarantined Areas -Notice

Artificial (human mediated) movement of EAB is a critical factor in the spread of this invasive pest. In order to stop the artificial spread of EAB we need to stop the transport of any ash wood with bark. It is important that, if you are working within a quarantined area and then move outside the quarantined area, you sign a state or federal compliance agreement; even if you are not intentionally moving wood products. A compliance agreement spells out what actions need to be done and dates of when certain activities can take place.

Students Spread the Word About EAB - Superior Telegram

As the school year drew to a close, fourth-grade students from Northern Lights Elementary School hit the sidewalks around Superior to spread the word about the emerald ash borer. The children distributed informational pamphlets shaped like ash trees in the section of the city nearest to the school, which has one of the most significant ash plantings. Through their work, the students learn the value of community service, but they also learned important facts about the metallic green beetle that could destroy 18 percent of Superior’s trees if it reaches the Northland.

The good news is, EAB has not found a home in the Chequamegon Bay area. But there could be bad news in the future if — or when, as officials and experts say it's all but inevitable — the invasive pest makes its way into the northland.

How Arborists & Foresters can Utilize LEAF Educational Resources

As a professional arborist or forester we have all been asked to share information about trees with public audiences of all ages. We love the profession and working with trees but often find it difficult transferring that passion and information through presentations. Olivia Witthun, WDNR Urban Forester, shares how she successfully utilized educational materials from LEAF for a program at Appleton’s Paper Discovery Center.
