EAB Stories Shared... Lessons Learned - Funding

This is the ninth entry in a ten part series compiled by DNR urban forestry staff who visited Michigan and Ohio communities dealing firsthand with EAB infestations. These entries bring to you stories shared by these communities, and offer supplemental information such as specific examples, documents, web sites and ideas you can implement to play a proactive role in facing the threat of EAB.

“Communities need to compare the cost of doing the work against the costs of not doing the work. The cost of going out for individual fallen branches is high. The cost of branches falling on vehicles is high.”

Tree-age Considered for EAB Control -The Capital Times

A state government proposal would hasten the use of a pesticide used to control the spread of the emerald ash borer. The move by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection would permit the department to register pesticide products without prior federal approval for one full year. This would allow the insecticide Tree-age (pronounced like "triage") to be used in the control of the invasive pest.

Now is the Time for Communities to Prepare for EAB

As local units of government discuss budgets and identify priorities for the upcoming year, state urban forestry specialists remind local officials to consider that a small metallic-green bug has the potential to complicate an already-challenging financial situation for Wisconsin’s cities, villages, towns, and counties. Community officials should be discussing how they will respond to an emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation before the invasive arrives, says Dick Rideout Department of Natural Resources urban forestry coordinator, “and the best time for that discussion to take place is during budget deliberations.

Wisconsin EAB Situation Weekly Report #5

Emerald ash borer has been discovered in two southeast Wisconsin counties: Ozaukee and Washington. A quarantine is currently in effect that covers those two counties and Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties. The quarantine prohibits the movement of any ash product that could transport a life stage of the emerald ash borer. This also includes all hardwood firewood. An ICS (Incident Command System) has been designated to oversee and guide multi-agency activities in the quarantine area. Each week a situation report is compiled regarding activities.
