August 4, 2008This issue's contents:Emerald Ash Borer Found in WisconsinMadison – Officials with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and the Department of Natural Resources today announced the first confirmed occurrence of emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive, destructive insect pest of ash trees, in Wisconsin. The discovery was made by forest health specialists investigating a citizen report of dying ash trees in a private woodlot in Ozaukee County, near the Village of Newburg. Frequently Asked Questions about Emerald Ash Borer [PDF, 75KB] EAB Community ToolkitThe DNR Urban Forestry Program has produced an Emerald Ash Borer Toolkit for Wisconsin Communities. This toolkit is a resource for local governments as they prepare for and respond to the anticipated arrival of EAB. It is a collaborative effort by Wisconsin DNR, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade & Consumer Protection, UW-Extension and USDA Forest Service. Input from other states, community foresters, arborists and municipal staff helped guide its development. The toolkit is designed for maximum flexibility to accommodate the needs of various users. The toolkit was updated in June, 2008. For more information and to learn how to obtain a toolkit: Wisconsin EAB Response PlanDNR Secretary Matt Frank and Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) secretary Rod Nilsestuen have given approval to an updated “Wisconsin Emerald Ash Borer Response Plan.” The plan describes a range of possible management steps and recommends balancing any recommended treatment with environmental impacts, land ownership, cost, sociological impacts, size of the infestation and traditional ecological knowledge.
