Conferences & SeminarsMelinda Myers to Speak at EpcotWisconsin gardening expert, TV host and author Melinda Myers will be the featured speaker at the EPCOT International Flower and Garden Show over Memorial Day weekend. Myers will present “Small Space Gardens” May 23-25 daily at noon & 3 p.m. She’ll share tips on creating gardens in small spaces as well as maintaining gardens with year round interest. As part of the Great American Gardeners series, Myers’ presentations will be held in EPCOT’s Wonders of Life Pavilion. Now the city is looking at which trees provide the best canopy. NYC's Million Trees [exit DNR] Tree-lined Streets 'Cut Asthma' - Smallwood NewsChildren who live in tree-lined streets have lower rates of asthma, a New York-based study suggests. Columbia University researchers found that asthma rates among children aged four and five fell by 25% for every extra 343 trees per square kilometer. They believe more trees may aid air quality or simply encourage children to play outside, although they say the true reason for the finding is unclear. Urban Forestry & Invasive Species in WisconsinInvasive species are negatively impacting forest productivity, biodiversity, and ecosystem function in Wisconsin’s forests, including our urban forest. Wisconsin’s Urban Forestry Community has responded to the threat of invasive species by participating in the development of Urban Forestry Best Management Practices for Invasive Species in Wisconsin. These BMPs will be voluntary standards of practice to aid in the management and control of invasive plants, invertebrates, and diseases in and around Wisconsin’s “built environments”. The students and teachers of the Drummond Area School District, along with volunteers and members of the Bayfield County community, participated in Trees For Success, a national program sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation. State EAB Strategy Shifts to Protect Ash Trees - Milwaukee Journal SentinelMany healthy ash trees in Wisconsin could escape the chain saw under a new strategy aimed at fighting the emerald ash borer. The plan will be released in a few weeks as state officials adjust their planned response to what they see as an inevitable invasion by the destructive beetle. EAB Treatment Gives Tree Owners Hope - Chicago TribuneHomeowners who lost hope of saving their ash trees are optimistic now that a new insecticide has shown success in fighting against a tree-killing beetle marching across the Midwest. Operators of golf courses, cemeteries and arboreta also are showing interest in the insecticide approved for use in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and West Virginia. Planting After EAB - Skokie ReviewThe Village of Skokie in Illinois is requesting more than $11,677 for a grant to help pay for plantings to replace trees that had to be cut down because of infestation by the emerald ash borer.
