October is National NeighborWoods MonthNeighborWoods Month is a united campaign to celebrate trees and raise awareness for the value of urban forests. During October, tree advocates across the U.S. will engage thousands of volunteers in stewardship events and educational programs, communicating a shared message that trees are essential to the health and livability of communities. NeighborWoods Month [exit DNR] New Ground on Tree Liability - The Washington PostWho pays if your neighbor's tree damages your house? The Virginia Supreme Court has weighed in on the contentious issue with a decision that overturns a nearly 70-year-old precedent. Now, for the first time, homeowners can sue to force a neighbor to cut back branches or roots or take out the tree altogether if it poses a risk of "actual harm" or an "imminent danger" to their houses, the court ruled. Tree owners can now be held liable for any damage caused by the tree. NUCFAC Grant Pre-Proposal Deadline ExtendedThe deadline has been extended to October 12, 2007 for the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (NUCFAC) pre-proposals for the 2008 Challenge Cost-Share Grant program. Approximately $1 million in grants will be awarded for urban and community forestry projects that have a national or widespread significance in their impact or application. Grant funds are made available through the USDA. NUCFAC 2008 Challenge Cost-Sharing Grants [exit DNR] Forestry Grants Helps Greensburg, KansasThe F-5 tornado that hit Greensburg, Kansas, on May 4 destroyed over 95 percent of the community, including its trees. On July 13, the US Forestry Service Rocky Mountain Region State and Private Forestry awarded $25,000 to the Kansas Forest Service (KFS) to help the City of Greensburg restock its community forest. Forestry Grants Help Replant [exit DNR] WDNR Officials Tour Michigan Communities - K & G PublishingIn late August representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, accompanied by representatives from Michigan’s DNR, toured several cities and spoke with officials about their experiences with the emerald ash borer. The officials visited Gross Pointe Farms, Dearborn, Belleville, Monroe and Romulus. Job Opportunity: Forestry Technicians - Emerald Ash Borer Detection SurveyIf you enjoy working outdoors, are organized, detail oriented, safety conscious, can read a map and know how to handle a chainsaw, then a place on our detection survey crews may be just the job for you. We're hiring 16 limited term employees to work in the Madison, Milwaukee or Green Bay areas to cut down pre-selected ash trees, hand peel ash trunks and limbs, collect samples and chip wood and brush. Emerald Ash Detection Survey [exit DNR] State Fails to Find EAB - Postcrescent.comState officials are hoping that in the case of one invasive insect, no news is good news. Earlier this summer, the state launched a new effort to determine whether the emerald ash borer beetle, a big threat to ash trees, had arrived. The effort involved special traps, including some placed in northeast Wisconsin. Officials are now taking the traps down and are looking to see what's inside. The results so far are promising.
