Tree Shaded Buildings Save On Energy Costs

Tree canopy cover data from aerial photographs and building energy simulations were applied to estimate energy savings from existing trees and new plantings in California. Peak load reduction by existing trees saves utilities 10% valued at approximately $778.5 million annually, or $ 4.39/tree. Planting 50 million trees to shade east and west walls of residential buildings is projected to reduce cooling by 1.1% and peak load demand by 4.5% over a 15-year period.

State Global Warming Task Force - LaCrosse Tribune

The session was not to debate the science of greenhouse gas emissions — that was made clear from the start. Instead, Gov. Jim Doyle’s task force on global warming focused its first meeting on gathering ideas on how greenhouse gases could be reduced in Wisconsin while still keeping the state’s economy growing.

Business leaders and the public were invited to be part of the process, with the two-hour session teleconferenced conducted August 6 at sites in Madison, Green Bay, Milwaukee and at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Wing Technology Center.

GIS Natural Connections Interactive Mapping Website

Openlands and Center for Neighborhood Technology have developed a Green Infrastructure Mapping tool to create customized maps to identify and protect the natural resources of the region. The project embraces a geographic scope of 19 counties in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Through the assistance of numerous organizations and agencies, they have also developed an interactive website containing approximately 400 natural resource and sustainability data layers that is now available for public use. This new planning tool allows people to target specific geographic regions and combine numerous data layers to create maps.
