Who needs Tour de France when forestry has Tour des Trees? Wisconsin's very own, Dick Rideout, State Urban Forestry Coordinator is riding for Wisconsin in the TREE Fund's 16th annual Tour des Trees. The seven-day, 500+-mile cycling event raises money to support research on trees and their care, and to promote the importance of urban and community forests. It is the world's largest fundraising event to improve the care of urban trees through research and education. Since its inception, the Tour des Trees has grossed nearly $3 million.

This year's tour began in Sacramento, CA on Friday, July 20th and ends in San Jose, CA on Thursday, July 26th. Every mile the cyclists ride and every dollar raised by sponsors help further research and education in the field of tree care worldwide.

Each rider is required to raise a minimum of $3500 to be allowed to ride. As the dairyland's sole rider, Dick has set a goal of $10,000! Dick is more than half-way there. To learn more about Tour des Trees, how Dick is fairing and how you can support tree research visit www.tourdestrees.org/. New Invasive Insect Confirmed in Michigan - Sirex Woodwasp

The Michigan departments of Agriculture (MDA) and Natural Resources (DNR), along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), have confirmation of Sirex Woodwasp in Macomb County. A single specimen was collected from a trap on July 6 and later identified by the USDA.

Sirex Woodwasp is a wood-boring insect native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa and is a potentially serious pest of commercially produced pine trees. It was first detected in North America in Oswego, N.Y. in 2004, and has since been found throughout central New York, northern Pennsylvania, and southern Ontario.

Perennial Pepperweed, a New Invasive Mustard, Found in Wisconsin

A small population of a new herbaceous perennial weed, perennial pepperweed (Lepidium latifolium L.) was recently discovered along a roadside in Green Bay. This plant is very similar to Canada thistle as it can invade croplands and natural areas causing near monotypic stands. Perennial pepperweed has become a major problem in other states as it has invaded alfalfa fields, pastures, rights of ways, and natural areas causing significant economic and environmental damage. It has been found in other Midwestern states, but this is the first siting in Wisconsin.

Neighborhoods Can Reduce the Risk of Obesity

Obesity is the most serious public health problem confronting America today. Obese and overweight Americans face elevated risks of chronic illness and disability. As the obesity epidemic worsens, researchers are zeroing in on environmental factors that may contribute to the problem or, conversely, help to prevent it. It is increasingly clear that neighborhoods play an important role in stimulating exercise and reducing the risk of obesity.

North Woods Facing Unique Set of Issues

When people think of the North, they think of vast stands of forests interspersed with sky blue waters of thousands of lakes. The inland lakeshores are pretty much developed, and forested land is undergoing rapid change. The latter is keeping pace with a national trend.

15th International Symposium on NDT of Wood -September 10-12, 2007

Duluth, Minnesota will be the site for this symposium which serves as a forum for those involved in nondestructive testing (NDT) of wood and will bring together NDT users, suppliers, international researchers, government agencies and other groups to share new research, products and technology for using NDT to evaluate standing trees, logs, lumber and wood structures. Networking among participants will enable new collaboration and implementation of NDT technologies around the world, while generating new research ideas. A hands-on inspection of a Duluth area historic wood building at the completion of the Symposiums is planned where participants will have an opportunity to use inspection equipment like stress wave timers, resistance drills and acoustic tomography while collaborating on a project to benefit a local organization by conducting a structural condition assessment of the buildings and trees.
