American Forests Global ReLeaf2 CampaignAmerican Forests is launching Global ReLeaf2. Their goal is to plant 100 million trees by the year 2020, a goal that can only be attained through the support of communities, businesses, partner organizations and individuals. By helping restore the life-giving ecosystem services produced by forests, you can help prevent the loss of more trees. Trees Help Girls SucceedIn a study conducted in Chicago's Robert Taylor Homes public housing development, girls who lived in apartments with greener, more natural views scored better on tests of self-discipline than those living in more barren but otherwise identical housing. Trees Help Girls Succeed [exit DNR] Boston and New York Unveil Major Tree InitiativesBoston will plant 100,000 trees during the next 13 years, bringing canopy cover to 35%, with the bulk of the plantings to take root in the city's least green neighborhoods, announced Mayor Thomas M. Menino. The City is also teaming up with the Forest Service to study the benefits for residents. New York's goal is to reforest 2,000 targeted acres of parkland and plant one million trees in vacant lots by 2020. This includes an additional $20 million per year for the city's urban forestry program and 40 new tree maintenance staff that will enable pruning and care of 5 million trees each year. Major Tree Initiatives [exit DNR] Job Opportunity - UW ExtensionUniversity of Wisconsin-Extension announces the opening of the position of Basin Educator for Natural Resources (Forest Resource Emphasis) - Upper Chippewa Basin located in northern Wisconsin in the Cooperative Extension (CE) Northern District. The office location is flexible and to be determined by the successful candidate who is hired. There are four office locations in Wisconsin to choose from, they are: Park Falls, Hayward, Ladysmith and Winter. The Basin Educator plays a lead role in developing and delivering forest resource and ecosystem-based educational programs that protect and improve local land and water resources. Applications are due June 5. Gypsy Moth Spraying to BeginAerial spraying to protect trees and forests from the potentially defoliating effects of the invasive gypsy moth are planned for May. Trained pilots will treat approximately 1,235 acres in eight counties as part of the 2007 gypsy moth suppression program. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources coordinates the program, which responds to local officials' request for spraying. Emerald Ash Borer Awareness WeekWisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, announced that Wisconsin will participate in recognizing Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week, scheduled for May 20-26, 2007. Gov. Doyle urges state residents and visitors to become better educated about the pest and the destruction that it causes. Emerald Ash Borer News release [exit DNR] Emerald Ash Borer Proclamation [exit DNR] New Rules Restrict Firewood MovementTo help prevent the spread of pests and to protect neighborhood trees and state parks, forests and natural areas, new state rules prohibit bringing firewood into Wisconsin from outside the state. Rules also prohibit bringing firewood from more than 50 miles away into all Department of Natural Resources managed properties including state parks and forests. New State Rules Restrict Firewood Movement Peninsula Park Campers Get Education on Ash Borer - Green Bay Press-GazetteThe superintendent of Peninsula Park, Wisconsin's busiest overnight state park destination, says some campers are upset over a new rule that prohibits bringing firewood from out-of-state or from more then 50 miles away into state Department of Natural Resources-managed properties. Since being found in Michigan in 2002, the alien invader from northern China and Korea has killed millions of trees in the Midwest. Last year, it was found in northern Illinois. "My most terrifying nightmare is a load of firewood harboring emerald ash borer (larvae or beetles) traveling from northern Illinois to a cabin, deer camp or campground in northern Wisconsin," said Door County landowner Tom Gaertner of Brussels. "It's probably already happened." Insect Leads to Firewood Ban - Wausau Daily HeraldAvid campers can thank the emerald ash borer for a new Park Commission measure that bans all outside firewood in Marathon County forests and parks. The commission last week unanimously approved the administrative rule, which became effective immediately. Campers will be allowed to purchase firewood at $4 a bundle at Dells of the Eau Claire Park and Big Eau Pleine Park. Marathon Park doesn't allow campfires, said Peter Knotek, assistant director of the Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department. Mount Prospect Responses to EAB Threat - The Daily HeraldMount Prospect, Illinois has tailored its solid waste program to conform to federal restrictions related to the emerald ash borer infestation. The village has yet to find traces of the green beetle in its trees. However, in response to a federal prohibition on transporting discarded logs across state lines, Mount Prospect is prohibiting residents from putting logs larger than 3.5 inches in diameter in garbage carts. Instead, they must be placed outside the carts to allow ARC Disposal to collect the logs as brush. Mt. Prospect Responses to EAB Threat [exit DNR] Neighbors Raise Money to Treat Ash Trees - Grand Rapids PressAs city officials prepared to use chainsaws to cut infested ash trees several blocks over, neighbors passed the hat to save about 25 ash trees on Annchester Drive in Grand Rapids, MI. "To not try and save trees that have been there 30 or 40 years seemed ludicrous," said Margie Kemink, who has lived on Annchester Drive for 21 years. Cankers on Sugar maple in Richland Center Firewood from Illinois is recalled New Forest Health information available on-line Public Works Association Schedules EAB SessionA special educational session on emerald ash borer has just been added to the program for the American Public Works Association- Chicago Metro Chapter Conference and EXPO scheduled for May 24, 2007 in Schaumburg, IL. The EAB session will begin at 1:00 p.m. and since it was recently added is not included in the registration brochure. The speakers will present tips on how to identify the insect, provide information on state and federal activities, and help both management and field personnel prepare for EAB's arrival in their communities. Every year, the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June are designated as a Free Fishing Weekend throughout the state of Wisconsin. This event is designed to encourage citizens to get out take kids fishing. Teachers can take advantage of programs at several state parks and at DNR regional offices that loan out fishing equipment. June 4 - August 17, September 10 - November 23. Fundamentals of Environmental Education. This online course will be offered this fall through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point twice in 2007. Scholarships are available to community and state level EE leaders who are interested in taking the course. June 10 - August 24, September 10 - December 7. Applied Environmental Education Program Evaluation. This online course will be offered twice in 2007. The course is designed to assist environmental educators and natural resource professionals in evaluating their education programs. June 15-17. Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair, ReNew the Earth Institute, Custer.
