The Nature Conservancy advocates that to protect our forests from a myriad of damaging pests, the U.S. Department of Agriculture needs to adopt much more effective prevention programs. USDA has begun updating its regulations, but the process will take years - during which time more pests will enter unless we take steps to prevent additional introductions while the new system is put in place. Nature Conservancy Response (exit DNR) State 'Boxed In' on Ash Cutting - Milwaukee Journal SentinelThe person in charge of Wisconsin's fight to keep the emerald ash borer from ravaging the state's 717 million ash trees concedes she has some doubts about a controversial state plan to stop the bug's advance with massive cuts of healthy trees - a plan she has defended for months. But Melody Walker, the chief of the pest survey and control section of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, said she has little choice in the matter.
