Winter a Good Time to Prune Trees

Snow shoveling is not the only winter yard work home and landowners may want to undertake. Winter is a good time for tree pruning, especially on oak trees. Winter pruning greatly reduces the likelihood of spreading oak wilt and other tree diseases and minimizes pruning stress on trees, according to tree health experts.

Urban Tree Benefits Webcast

The WDNR and USFS is hosting an informational webcast (online meeting & conference call) titled "An Urban Forest Pilot Project: Mapping & Calculating the Benefits of City Trees" on Tuesday, March 13 at 1 p.m. CST. The hour-long webcast will share the results from a recent mapping project in Middleton, WI. NCDC Imaging & Mapping, American Forests and the DNR will demonstrate the benefits that urban trees provide for stormwater mitigation, water quality improvement, increased carbon sequestration and air pollution reduction. The webcast will illustrate the tree canopy and impervious surface data created, how this is used with CITYgreen software to calculate the dollar value that trees save your city, how green infrastructure connections can be made in the process and how the findings will be used to improve Middleton's urban forest.

Join us for this educational review demonstrating how the application of advanced technology can create simple, yet powerful information that any city can benefit from.

Instructions for calling and logging into the webcast (PDF, 19KB). Contact Ian.Brown@Wisconsin.gov with questions.

Rx For Conifers

Did you know that conifers provide more measurable environmental benefits than deciduous trees? Conifers have the most leaf surface area and therefore are most effective and intercepting rainfall, and are effective at filtering particulate pollution and sequestering CO2. Spruce up your spruces and primp your pines at Morton Arboretum's "Rx for Conifers" scheduled for Friday, March 16, 2007. Morton Arboretum is located in Lisle, IL 30 miles west of Chicago.
