Based on the latest comprehensive weather station data, The National Arbor Day Foundation has just released a new 2006 arborday.org Hardiness Zone Map which separates the country into ten different temperature zones to help people select the right trees to plant where they live. The new map reflects that many areas have become warmer since 1990 when the last USDA hardiness zone map was published. Significant portions of many states have shifted at least one full hardiness zone. 2006 arborday.org Hardiness Zone Map (Exit DNR) Screening for Invasive Species Could Save U.S. BillionsA new study shows that screening for potentially harmful foreign plant species before they are imported is more economically beneficial than fighting them after they take root in new areas. Robson announced on December 6th who will chair Senate committees. Officials in Prince George County are scrambling to prevent the beetle from spreading. State officials are preparing to cut down all ash trees in an 11,000-acre swath in the Clinton-Brandywine area, close to where the insect was discovered this summer and fall. Maryland EAB Eradication Plans (Exit DNR) Ohio EAB Scam ( WCPO - 9 News)A southern Ohio woman signed a $10,000 contract to have cut down what she was told were two trees infested with a dangerous insect, but later found out it was a scam. Lebanon, Ohio to Chop Ash Trees (The Enquirer)The city of Lebanon, Ohio (located midway between Dayton and Cincinnati) is spending $125,000 over the next 10 years to remove its roughly 550 ash trees before they are killed by the emerald ash borer insect.
