Action Alert for Urban Forestry

United States House of Representatives and Senate appropriations staff are reportedly now working, pre-conference, to develop joint budgets for the FY 2007 federal budget for Urban and Community Forestry and other key Forest Service programs. For advocates, the biggest challenge right now is to make an impact in the Senate. From what we hear, Senate members generally have not been vocal in their support for the Urban and Community Forestry program, with the exception of a small handful of lawmakers.

Tree Lovers Battle Insect Invasion (USA TODAY)

Seventy-five years ago, Dutch elm disease invaded the USA and began killing shade trees along thousands of city streets across the land. As the fungus from Europe decimated the American elm, many communities replaced it with the ash tree, another stately native. Now another pest, the emerald ash borer, is killing the replacements - and a battle is underway to save the trees.

eBay Car Buy Likely Gypsy Moth Source (KTVZ News)

After a couple of years of a relatively low number of gypsy moth detections in Oregon, activity has picked up following this summer's statewide trapping program. The largest gypsy moth infestation east of Cascades Mts. apparently came from 1967 Chevy automobile bought from Connecticut.

Trees Under Attack from Bugs & Blight (USA Today)

Some of the USA's most treasured tree species, from ash and aspen to white pine and Hawaii's native wiliwili, are under attack by insects and diseases in a growing assault coast to coast. Some of the killers are foreign pests brought here in cargo or by travelers. Others are homegrown insects at epidemic levels because of drought and unusual warmth. This year has been the warmest on record.

Rain Gardens Filter Storm Water (LaCrosse Tribune)

Some storm water utilities give credits or fee reductions for properties that provide storm water retention systems. Public works officials say La Crosse probably would not initially give such credits because it would make administration more difficult and because storm water utility measures deal with large rain events, which projects such as rain gardens are not designed to handle.

No EAB in Wisconsin State Parks

Surveys find no sign of tree-killing beetle in Wisconsin state parks. Researchers looking for the emerald ash borer in Wisconsin State Parks have found no evidence of the dreaded insect that's responsible for the demise of nearly 20 million ash trees in three Midwest states and one Canadian province. Workers cut down and stripped the bark from 53 ash trees in 21 parks this fall. An additional 78 trees were intentionally wounded and left standing as part of surveys that will be conducted next year.
