Arbor Day at the State CapitolApril weather is always somewhat unpredictable, and this year's Arbor Day severe weather forecast for the Madison area, which predicted high winds, possible tornadoes, rain, heat waves and lightning, wasn't particularly encouraging for an outdoor celebration. But as the saying goes, "The show (or more correctly stated, Arbor Day) must go on!" Like Johnny Appleseed, they have vowed to sow their seeds in great profusion, promising millions of new trees in the coming years. Arbor Day, that old fusty holiday, is getting a makeover. Greening of America [exit DNR] Wisconsin EAB Week - May 18-24, 2008Governor Jim Doyle announced that Wisconsin will observe Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week, May 18-24, 2008. Through a proclamation, Gov. Doyle urged state residents and visitors to become better educated about emerald ash borer and the destruction it causes. Senators Push for Invasive Pest FundingU.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) led a bipartisan group of 20 Senators in sending a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee asking for $90 million to increase funding to help eradicate invasive pests that threaten our forests. Illinois EAB NewsletterCurrent information on Illinois EAB efforts are reported in the March/April/May issue of the EAB newsletter IL EAB [exit DNR] Select "newsletters" in the left sidebar 2009 Wisconsin DNR Urban Forestry GrantsThe DNR offers financial assistance for urban forestry projects that improve a community's capacity to manage its trees. Eligible applicants may be a city, village, town, county, tribal government or 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and joint applicants are encouraged to apply. The urban forestry grant program supports projects that advance a community's urban forestry management program. The grant program is a 50/50 cost-share program where applicants match each grant dollar. Grant awards range from $1,000 to $25,000. An Intent to Apply form is available on the website. Completing and returning an Intent to Apply form ensures that you will receive an application. Northern Forest Pest Report [PDF, 452KB] UW-Extension Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic UpdateUW-Extension/Madison Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic (PDDC) receives plant sample from around the state. The following diseases/disorders have been identified at the PDDC during the past three weeks. Tree Sales and Giveaways WebcastThe Alliance for Community Trees (ACT) is hosting a national webcast, Tree Sales and Giveaways on Thursday, May 15 from 12 noon to 1:00 pm CST. The informal training provides an opportunity for community forestry practitioners to learn about successful programs and how they can be adapted to their communities.
Tree giveaways and sales are a great way to engage a broad segment of the community including individual residents, neighborhood organizations, affordable housing agencies, schools, and civic groups. They're also a profitable way to raise funds for efforts to work with these same constituencies. Tree Sales and Giveaways [exit DNR] Scholarships Available for National Conference on Urban EcosystemsThe 2008 National Conference on Urban Ecosystems is scheduled for May 28 - 30, 2008 in Orlando, Florida. There are 140 scholarships available with each scholarship providing a $250 discount off of the full registration cost. Conservation Fundraising TrainingThe Alliance for Community Trees and the Arbor Day Foundation are teaming up to offer a day of outstanding training from conservation fundraising expert Andy Robinson, on May 28 in conjunction with the National Urban Ecosystems Conference in Orlando.
