Peshtigo River State Forest

Boating and Paddling Safety Guidelines

Near the Peshtigo River Dams

  • Boaters should be cautious when near or below the dams. Please remember to respect warning lights and sirens; these signals indicate open dam gates and changing water levels.
  • Use extreme caution when boating or portaging near the dams. Currents are unpredictable and can be quite powerful.
  • Respect restraining barriers and warning signs. Never cross the restraining barriers above a dam.

Water Conditions

River flow (in cubic feet per second) and water levels can fluctuate significantly in the Peshtigo Flowages. Rain and snow can increase water flow and raise water levels quickly.

Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, which owns and operates the hydroelectric dams on the Peshtigo Flowages, provides hydroelectric project data (exit DNR) on water and flow levels.
