Forest Management

Forest management goals for the state forests are determined in their master plans and the master planning process on the Peshtigo River State Forest is in full swing. Department of Natural Resources-Division of Forestry planners and staff are currently working to establish management goals and objectives for the property with extensive input from the public.

Protection of Wisconsin's Water Resources

One of the DNR's most important goals for managing our forests, and one of the main reasons the Peshtigo River State Forest was established, is to protect the quality of Wisconsin's water resources, including lakes, streams, rivers and flowages. At the same time, the DNR strives to enhance wildlife habitat, fisheries, aesthetics, recreation, as well as supply quality wood products, by following the principles of sustainable forestry.

Sustainable Forest Management

Sustainable forestry means managing the land in accordance with its natural capability to provide ecological, social and economic benefits both now and in the future. The ecological benefits of sustainable forestry on the Peshtigo River State Forest include protection of soils, water quality, native biological diversity, and aquatic and terrestrial wildlife habitat. Examples of social benefits include outdoor recreation opportunities, and aesthetic enjoyment. The forest also provides a continuous supply of wood products, which benefits the economies of nearby communities and Wisconsin as a whole.
