Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest
Generations of Northwoods Memories

Over the years we've noticed that many families have a favorite campground on the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest and many of you have been camping here for years. It is especially nice to hear about generations of the same family coming back year after year. After hearing some of your great memories, we'd like to start saving, and maybe sharing them. So please, tell us your story...

Family tradition at Buffalo Lake

Our family has been camping at Buffalo Lake for decades. My father first camped there with his family when he was a little boy, and it very quickly became his "favorite place in the whole wide world." As an adult, he and his siblings took their own families every summer. There were so many of us, it seemed we took up one whole road of the campground. We have made so many memories there over the years, we could write a book. With a family now of my own, we still make the same trip to Buffalo Lake every summer. My Parents and siblings, along with some cousins and uncles, all take our families at the same time, and it seems we still take up a whole road of the campground :-) In this age of technology, with ipods and computers, it gives me so much joy to see my children put those things aside and enjoy the campground as much as I have my entire life. As it was my father's, Buffalo Lake is also my eldest daughter's "favorite place in the whole wide world," and I wanted to share with you a picture she and her friends took of themselves last year on our trip (at the 'big rock' on the north side of the lake). They say a picture is worth a thousands words, but this picture sums up in one word how our family has felt about this special place for decades!

Kate and Jeff

I vacationed to Crystal Lake every year with my family. Jeff and I are moving to Eagle River this fall, and we come to the area today to start looking at the area. Jeff brought me to Crystal Lake to walk on the beach - he then proposed by knelling in the sand. We will continue to come back to Crystal to remember this fantastic day!
