Northern Highland - American Legion State ForestTimber Sales and Forest Products
A Well-Managed Forest Keeps Giving and GivingThe timber resource of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest is managed in several ways, but most visibly through the Timber Sale program. Each spring and fall, the forestry staff puts together a bid package and lets it out to prospective loggers for bidding. In addition to timber sales, firewood permits are issued to the public to salvage up to 10 cords of dead trees per year for personal use. Christmas tree and bough (personal and commercial) permits are also issued to the public.
NHAL-SF Timber Sale InformationThe Potential Timber Sale Areas identify forest stands scheduled for management in the upcoming year. The areas are only approximations. The areas themselves may change or additional areas may be included as field work is completed. The Timber Sale Prospectus (Bid Package) identifies the forest stands that have been established for a timber sale and sent out for bids. Areas and associated maps are in final format as well as the timber sale specifics. Twice each year (May and November), the NH-AL State Forest conducts a bid opening to sell tracts of timber established by its staff of professional foresters. A bid package is prepared and will be available about two to three weeks prior to the bid opening. The bid package lists each tract's location, the quantity and price of the timber offered, and any special conditions pertaining to that tract. The bid package includes the following:
Timber sale bid results showing the tracts sold, their bid (selling) prices, and who purchased them will be posted within one week after the bid opening.

The Department of Natural Resources Timber Sale Handbook outlines DNR policies and procedures for conducting timber sales on public lands (state forest and county forests). The DNR-Division of Forestry Silviculture Handbook describes the science-based and systematic approaches used by forest managers to implement management recommendations and decisions for each major timber type found in Wisconsin. These standards apply to all DNR-owned lands, all acreage designated as county forest land, and private lands enrolled in the state's forest tax law programs.
