Northern Highland - American Legion State ForestInterpretive Program
With the goal of educating the public about the ecological, economic and social benefits of forests, our Interpretive Program tries to incorporate all of these ideas into fun and interesting programs for our visitors at locations throughout the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. In addition to a full summer schedule of programs, we have an outstanding nature center at the Crystal Lake Campground in Sayner, WI, which includes a variety of educational displays and activities for the entire family. Within the NH-AL, there are also five interpretive trails for those who would like to take a self-guided tour of the forest landscape. The trails traverse varied terrain and expose visitors to a wide range of natural habitats. We encourage you to attend our summer programs while you are visiting the NH-AL. Check out our schedule to see what's going on! To learn more about our educational programs or what's happening at the Crystal Lake Nature Center, please contact: Zach Wilson - Naturalist - Zach graduated from Northland College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Outdoor Education & Natural History in 2000. He was the Program Director and Wilderness guide for Lake Trails Base Camp in Lake of the Woods, MN for 4 years, and has also traveled to 15 countries learning about environmental issues, organic faming practices and culture. Before joining the Discovery Center in 2002, Zach decided to move back to his home town and practice the philosophy of "Acting Locally and Thinking Globally". He strongly believes in community and integrating the natural world into everyday life. In addition, to his responsibilities as Staff Naturalist, Zach serves as the coordinator for the Woods & Waters project that involves high school students from Mercer and Hurley, studying the ecology of the fisher and common loon.
