Black River State Forest

Interpretive and Educational Programs

The Black River State Forest occasionally hosts interpretive programs for campers and the general public, especially during the summer. Everyone is welcome! Please check this page periodically for program schedules.

Programs are held in the shelter building at Castle Mound Campground, one mile south of Black River Falls on Hwy 12 East. For admission to the state forest, you must have a Wisconsin State Park and Forests vehicle admission sticker, or you can purchase a program pass for $3.00/vehicle at the entrance station. Pedestrians and bicyclists are admitted free-of-charge.

June 14 at 9:30 p.m. The Night Sky: Discover the Magic and Mystery
Observe celestial objects through telescopes and learn how to identify constellations, stars and other features in the night sky.

June 28 at 10 a.m. Butterflies
Learn how to attract these “jewels” to your your yard, how to identify them and understand their behavior.

July 5 at 7 p.m. Owls
Learn about the fascinating adaptations and behaviors of these nocturnal hunters.

July 19 at 10 a.m. Interpretive Hike
Join a Naturalist for a leisurely hike along the nature trail to learn more about the plants, animals, and ecology of the area.

August 2 at 10 a.m. Nature Crafts for Kids
Bring the kids to create a few unique crafts from nature.

August 16 at 8 a.m. Bird Banding
Feel the heartbeat of a live songbird as you assist certified bird banders capture and band birds.

August 23 at 8:15 a.m. Women in the Outdoors
Join us for a day of good food, great fun and new adventure, all while learning new skills and activities that can be used for a lifetime.

August 30 at 1 p.m. Bears
Come and learn about the secretive life of one of Wisconsin's largest wild animals.
