Division of Forestry
Wisconsin's 16 million acres of forestlands and millions of urban trees are managed and cared for by a variety of stewards including the DNR-Division of Forestry, the U.S. Forest Service, forest industries, individual private landowners, and the state's counties, cities, towns and villages. State-owned forests make up just five percent of the total, while nearly 60 percent of Wisconsin's forestlands are privately owned by individuals and families.
Our Forest Lands
- State Forests Created to preserve important watersheds and unique ecosystems, the state forests provide abundant recreation, habitat for wildlife and rare species, quality forest products, and many other benefits.
- County Forests Managed through a unique partnership between professional county foresters and the DNR, the county forests' large blocks of land are key to Wisconsin's tourism and forest products industries.
- Forest Tax Laws Encourage sustainable forestry on private lands by providing tax incentives to landowners.
- Private Forestry Offers professional forestry assistance, financial help and educational programs to individual and family landowners.
- Urban and Community Forestry Promotes sound management of Wisconsin's urban forests by providing assistance to community officials, businesses, schools, the general public and other urban forest managers.
