Forestry Information Technology Planning

The Five IT Architectures describe the Forestry’s IT assets and infrastructures. These architectures describe the IT infrastructures that are the foundation for Forestry’s IT systems. Download the Forestry IT Plan (572K, PDF) or contact Mark Heyde at (608)267-0565, Mark.Heyde@Wisconsin.gov.

Application Architecture is a framework for building and managing the automated systems the department uses to support its programs and provide services to its customers. The Application Architecture enables efficient development, deployment and support of applications by employing the most effective technologies, e.g. geographic information systems (GIS) and the web. The framework includes "best practices" for application development.

Technology Architecture consists of the hardware and software infrastructure, as well as staff, standards, policies and procedures that guide and support the consistent design, implementation, maintenance and integration of IT systems across the enterprise. This infrastructure includes servers, firewalls, operating systems, database and GIS software, and standard desktop software, file and print services, wiring and telecommunications.

Security Architecture refers to the hardware, software, staff, standards, policies and procedures needed to ensure that DNR's IT assets are secure from unauthorized access and use, and protected from damage, theft and technical problems. This framework promotes and supports a broad range of security issues, including user logon and verification, firewalls, software licensing and disaster recovery.

Data Architecture is DNR's framework for promoting and supporting the consistent collection, development, use, storage, management, documentation, distribution and integration of high-quality secure data to advance the business objectives of the agency, its partners and customers. This architecture includes policies, plans, standards, procedures, best practices, other guidance, enterprise GIS and Oracle data libraries.

Organizational Architecture consists of DNR's staff throughout the state who possess the skills to assure delivery of appropriate levels of IT products and services to support the agency's diverse business needs. In partnership with program staff, IT specialists and managers support the agency's telecommunication system, computing infrastructure and desktop PC network.
