book cover

"Wisconsin Forest Tales" by Julia Pferde-
hirt and Pamela Harden

Introduction

Wisconsin Forest Tales is a historical fiction book in which author Julia Pferdehirt and illustrator Pamela Harden share glimpses of forest history and life over the past 150 years.

The book was produced through a partnership between the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin; Learning, Experiences and Activities in Forestry (LEAF), Wisconsin's K-12 forestry education program; and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources-Division of Forestry. Funding was provided by the Wisconsin DNR-Division of Forestry, a 2003-2004 grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board [exit DNR] and LEAF [PDF].

Among her programs is Jack Tales, a collection of true stories and "tall tales" from the history of logging and lumberjacks. Other programs include author visits, writing workshops, stories of the underground railroad in Wisconsin and "In Their Own Words," which are first-person stories of Wisconsin immigrants.
