Work* Play* Earth Day

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Activities: Outdoor activity, Volunteer opportunity, Work day, Work Play Earth Day
Location: Richard Bong SRA

Continue the Earth Day Celebration by helping nature and the park by planting trees or other projects. Dress to be working outside. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks and the Bong Naturalist Association. Projects may change if it is raining. Please pre-register by calling (262) 878-5601. Meet at the Visitor Center but be prepared to drive.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Work Play Earth Day - Celebrate EARTH DAY by volunteering at your State Parks!

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Activities: Outdoor activity, Volunteer opportunity, Work day, Work Play Earth Day
Location: Merrick SP

Come volunteer at our work day and help us prepare the park for another season. Activities include planting trees, constructing a firewood shed, painting picnic tables, and pulling garlic mustard. Meet at the Main Park Office at 9 a.m. The program will go to about noon, followed by lunch, provided by the Merrick TURTLES. Please bring gloves, water and close-toed shoes.

Merrick SP information

Located along the lazy Mississippi River and surrounded by the hills of Wisconsin's Coulee Region, the 322-acre Merrick State Park is popular with anglers and boaters. The marshy backwaters are home to a variety of fish, birds, animals and plants. Rising and falling river levels, though controlled some by dams, are part of the natural environment.

Work Play Earth Day - Celebrate EARTH DAY by volunteering at your State Parks!

Location: Whitefish Dunes SP

Volunteers are needed to help plant trees, clean up flower beds and pick up litter. Tasks mostly outside getting the park ready for summer. Volunteers should wear work boots, long pants and gloves. Please bring your own rakes, shovels and gloves if available. Come volunteer either in the morning, afternoon, or both. Lunch will be provided by the Friends Group. Please call the office and sign up at 920-823-2400.

Whitefish Dunes SP information

Whitefish Dunes State Park protects the fragile dune environment on the eastern Door County Peninsula. Stroll along Lake Michigan, watch waterfowl at Clark Lake, use the boardwalk to discover the wetlands or relax on one of the many trails throughout the forested sand dunes and beech forest. The park's nature center features year-round programs, exhibits and displays on ecology, geology and human history. Whitefish Dunes is a day-use park, there is no camping.

Work Play Earth Day - Celebrate EARTH DAY by volunteering at your State Parks!

Volunteer! Join Harrington Beach State Park staff in preparing our park for the summer. We will be focusing our spring cleaning efforts on trail maintenance, picnic table refurbishment, litter pick up, shelter cleaning, and grill maintenance. To show our appreciation, lunch will be served in the Ansay Welcome Center to say thank you to our volunteers. Please preregister by April 26 by phone or email so that we have enough lunch supplies. No admission required for volunteers.

Harrington Beach SP information

Harrington Beach State Park has more than a mile of beach along Lake Michigan. This 715-acre park also features a white cedar and hardwood swamp, old field grasslands with restored wetland ponds and a scenic limestone quarry lake. Camp, sunbathe, picnic, hike, bird watch, fish or practice astronomy. An observatory is open to the public for monthly viewings.

Trails Workday

Location: Devil's Lake SP

Volunteer and help work on the trails at Devil's Lake. We'll work on blocking off "non-official" trails along the West Bluff Trail. All tools will be provided, but you will want to bring a pair of work gloves and water. Stay for the whole time or come when you can to help. Meet at the Nature Center.

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Devil's Lake offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Enjoy lakeshore picnic areas, sandy swimming beaches, 29 miles of hiking trails, or ease into the backcountry solitude. Devil's Lake is a beautiful year-round park with an intriguing natural history along the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Work Play Earth Day - Celebrate EARTH DAY by volunteering at your State Parks!

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Location: Peninsula SP

Choose your "good earth action" by either helping pull garlic mustard below Sven's Bluff from 10 - 11 a.m. or by helping at the Nature Center from Noon to 3 p.m. Stay twenty minutes or longer! Jobs for all ages and abilities: raking, wood chipping, dusting, waxing trail signs, sorting craft supplies, sweeping, litter pick up. Make your own pudgy pie pizza over a campfire for helping, with food fixins' supplied by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. This program is free and open to the public. Nature Center clean-up takes place rain or shine. The garlic mustard pull will be cancelled if it is raining.

Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Adopt a Highway

Roche-A-Cri SP information

Roche-A-Cri State Park, established in 1948, protects a 300-foot-high rock outcropping and Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. The name "Roche-A-Cri" comes from French words meaning "crevice in the rock." The park has 41 rustic campsites and five miles of hiking trails within a forest of large oaks and pines. Carter Creek in the park offers fishing opportunities.

This billion-year-old hill is one of the oldest geological formations on earth. Rib Mountain State Park is a premier day-use facility with picnicking, hiking trails and a reservable amphitheater. The top of the 60-foot observation tower offers spectacular views of the Wausau area and Wisconsin River. Granite Peak Ski Area is on the north face of the mountain and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding during winter.

Rock Island SP information

This primitive island off the tip of the Door County Peninsula and northeast of Washington Island in Lake Michigan offers hiking trails, the oldest lighthouse in Wisconsin and 2000 feet of beach. Vehicles are not allowed on the 912-acre island, making for an experience unlike any other Wisconsin state park. Stone buildings, built by a wealthy inventor and his family, house exhibits. The ferry to the island runs Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day.
