Fluffy, Puffy Clouds Nature Storytime

Get Outdoors! Go. . . Learn to Kayak

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Activities: Canoeing/kayaking, Educational Programs, Outdoor activity
Location: Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit

This is the perfect program for people who have never kayaked and would like to learn. Join American Canoe Association instructors to learn the tricks and fun of flat water kayaking. We will kayak around Mauthe Lake and up the Milwaukee River. To register, call (920) 533-8322 by July 21. A $25 deposit must be paid to hold at registration which will be refunded at the workshop. No experience is necessary. The program is for people at least 10 years old. In the event of threatening weather, the program will be canceled. Saturday Morning Nature Sleuths

Calling all youth to unravel the mysteries of nature by participating in the Wisconsin Explorers program! The program involves completing a required number of engaging nature activities in one of three age appropriate books (ages 3-5, ages 6-8, and ages 9+) to earn a very cool patch. Get help from a naturalist who will work with youth on activities from one of the first four topic areas of the books. Locations: Picnic Shelters at Mauthe Lake Recreation Area (off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect) and Long Lake Recreation Area (off Division Road north of County Road F near Dundee). Whoopers and Sandhills: Wisconsin's Cranes

Whooping and sandhill cranes both call Wisconsin home. The whooping crane is one the most endangered cranes of the world while sandhills the most abundant. Join the International Crane Foundation staff to learn about their fascinating life histories and specific habitat requirements, how people can help them to survive, and how they compare to the other 13 crane species found throughout the world. Wisconsin's Mighty Mussels Evening Exploration

Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Activities: Nature study, Outdoor activity, Wildlife study

Warty purpleback, monkeyface, and creek heelsplitter sound like kids' nicknames, but they are just a few of Wisconsin's 51 species of mussels. These clam-like animals (bivalves) have truly intriguing life cycles, which include finding a host animal for their young, and play fascinating roles in our past and present economy. Weather permitting, Lisie Kitchel, Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources Conservation Biologist, will lead a mussel hunt in a local river, so bring your water shoes. Journey into Darkness Night Hike

As the sun sets and the light fades from the sky, the day animals retire and a new group of animals awakens. We will explore the darkening world for sounds of the night. Bring your bug spray and sense of adventure. This night hike is best for families/groups with children at least 5 years old.
