Full Moon Hike

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Activities: Hike, Night event, Outdoor activity
Location: Devil's Lake SP

One of the more magical times to explore the outdoors is by the light of the full moon. We'll go on a guided walk/snowshoe through the wooded trails of Devil's Lake (2 miles). Stop at the Full Moon Base Camp fire, near the parking lot, where you can warm up before and after the hike. If we have snow, we'll hike on snowshoes. Bring your snowshoes or borrow one of ours - we'll have a limited number of pairs to loan. Please wear proper footwear and clothing for the outdoors on a winter's night. Meet at the Steinke Basin Parking Lot.

Letterboxing Adventure

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Location: Devil's Lake SP

Drop-in anytime between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Letterboxing combines elements of hiking and treasure hunting into an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by following clues and recording their discovery in their personal journal stamping with the rubber stamp you get to make! Drop-in anytime between 10 am and 2:30 pm to go on a letterboxing adventure! We'll have journals for you to take with you or you can bring your own. Stop at the Nature Center to pick up the clues you need for this adventure. Meet at the Nature Center.

Winter Star Party

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Location: Devil's Lake SP

Come see the glorious stars and planets out during the winter. The winter sky is home to more bright stars and easy to recognize constellations than any other time of year! We'll have a couple of telescopes set up for you to look through, a fire to keep you warm, and a marshmallow or two to roast. Bundle up and see some wonderful winter skies - weather permitting. Drop in anytime - the program will be happening just behind the Rock Elm Shelter near the North Shore Boat Launch.

First Day Hike

Wisconsin State Parks is once again hosting First Day Hikes on New Year's Day. These hikes offer visitors an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenated and connected with nature. This year at Devil's Lake, go on your own hike or participate in a guided hike that will start at 4 p.m. We'll also have a campfire for you to warm up before and after the hike. Dress warm and bring your snowshoes (if we have snow). We'll have snowshoes to loan as well. Meet at the Steinke Basin parking lot on Hwy DL.

Glacial Landscape Hike/Snowshoe

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Location: Devil's Lake SP

Join the naturalist for a winter hike/snowshoe on the Roznos Meadow Trail and discover that you are actually traveling upon glacial landforms! On your journey, you'll learn how this amazing landform was created when the glaciers retreated 10,000 years ago. Dress for the outdoors; it can be quite windy and cold. Bring your snowshoes (if there is snow). We'll have a limited number of snowshoes to loan out for hike participants. The hike will be about 2 miles on flat, but uneven terrain. Meet at the Roznos Meadow Parking Lot off of Hwy 113.

Parents, bring your kids out for a day of fun in the snow! Borrow some snowshoes to hike around the lake. Make a snow fort. Warm up by the fire. Learn to Ice Fish

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Activities: Fishing, Free Fishing Weekend, Outdoor activity, Outdoor skills
Location: Devil's Lake SP

Bundle up to learn the basics of how to ice fish. Devil's Lake's volunteers and staff will help you go out on the ice and try to catch a fish! All equipment and bait is provided. All children must be accompanied by an adult and adults are welcome! Dress warm as there will be no shanties, but there will be a fire to warm up by on shore. This is a "Free Fishing Weekend" so not fishing license is required. This is a weather-dependent activity and can be canceled if ice conditions are not safe. Meet outside the Rock Elm Shelter on the park's north shore.

Back again this winter! Families will receive a set of clues to go on a scavenger hunt. Each family will need to work as a team as they hike along the trails to complete this challenge! Some challenges require a GPS unit (provided by the Nature Center) and make sure to bring your camera! You'll receive a small prize for completing one of the challenges. Pick up your clues at the Nature Center, then head out for an adventure!

Candlelight Snowshoe

Time: 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

It's winter, but that doesn't mean you have to stay inside! Cure your winter cabin fever and join us for this winter adventure! Go on a self-guided snowshoe (depending on snow) or hike through the park. Warm up by the campfire and make a s'more. Bring your snowshoes or borrow a pair of ours - we have lots of sizes to fit everyone in your family. Make sure you dress appropriately. Meet outside the Rock Elm shelter on the park's north shore. Sponsored by the Friends of Devil's Lake State Park.

Candlelight skis/hikes are very popular events at DNR properties, with some attracting thousands of visitors on a given night. Given the recent publicity of these events through social media outlets and the department's responsibility to provide a safe recreational experience, access to these events may be restricted at times when parking capacity has been reached. Thank you for helping make these events a success.
