Special Air Monitoring Reports

This Web page contains reports on special air monitoring studies of emissions from agricultural operations, urban air toxics, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), mercury and other hazardous air pollutants.

Agricultural

Livestock Fenceline Ammonia and Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring Study

This study, conducted in 2010, investigated concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide around several Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs) in south central Wisconsin, including a large poultry operation, 3 dairies and a small confined swine operation.

Dairy and Livestock Air Emission/Odor Project

This project was a joint effort between the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and Department of Natural Resources (DNR), partially funded through a USDA Conservation Innovation Grant or CIG. The project was a three year, $1.6 million demonstration of current technologies that focused on control of odor and concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide from agricultural operations.

Mercury

Airborne mercury is a significant contributor to fish contamination. These studies evaluate airborne mercury concentrations near mercury sources and atmospheric deposition of mercury around the state.

PCB

Polychlorinated Biphenyls are a legacy pollutant which are generally thought of as a primarily contaminated sediment issue. They are, however, ubiquitous in the air.

Spatial Distribution of Airborne PCBs in Milwaukee

Urban Air Toxics

The Urban Air Toxics program monitors a variety of heavy metals, and both volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds on an on-going basis.

Volatile Organic Compounds

Vehicle exhaust is a major source of volatile organic compounds, even in areas with a known major source.
